A friend, strugging with the loss of her husband that left her as a single mother of young sons, often felt like she carried the weight alone. I tried to tell her once that I was just one of many people not just willing but wanting to help. "Lifting you lifts me, too," I said. I also had in mind another friend as I wrote this. She had lost her daughter to an overdose, and as the anniversary of that awful date approached I wanted her to know that "if I can't find the healing words, to make it stop when you are hurting, I will give a willing ear, for you to unload your burdens."
